Me,Myself and I…My Time

We live in an impossibly hectic world. And right now it feels like there is no stop button and we are all hurtling towards impending doom! We are glued to our devices and are constantly in contact with the world around us in some form just to keep up with everything that is going on.

We allow all the noise outside to affect us so much, that we forget to look after ourselves and are terrified that if we take 60min or 40min or even a measley 10mins out of our schedules, that we would miss something!!  This overstimulation is causing us in some cases to literally go nuts!

Unfortunatley, we allow this state of being to go on for so long that we no longer know how to relax and spend time with ourselves. I was a classic case of the above and in the end I hit a wall. I had to find a way of getting some time for myself…daily.

It seemed the only time I could get alone and without a device in my hand was in the bath so I decided to design a product that would help me create a bubble of calm in which I could experience peace and quiet, at least for a little while and My Time does just that.

My Time has been created by blending the essential oils of Patchouli, Palmarosa and Geranium into the dispersible oil.

Patchouli brings balance to your root chakra helping to reduce mind-chatter and grounds your spirit in the moment it reminds you of the I AM within. Palmarosa and Geranium open and balance your heart chakra bring love and acceptance of one’s self to the moment. It helps to remind you that YOU LOVE.

This blend helps to remind you of who you are and what your expression of that person is in the world. It helps you recharge your deep spaces.

My Time creates a deeply relaxing experience which can be enhanced with a wonderful cup of herbal tea or a glass of wine if you have had that kind of day.

My Time is available online at along with all our other beautiful heart centered products, visit us today!

All That Glows… Aurum

Have you ever had that amazing moment in the sun in which there was warmth, life and the freshness of summer that literally made you GLOW. And have you wanted to hold onto that moment in your heart and your body for as long as you can?

Well I have, but because of the nature of the world around us that feeling fades every time. Sometimes it fades so quickly it feels like it never happened.

I decided to see if it was possible to recreate that feeling as a product that you can wear on your skin or put into your bath that allows you recreate that feeling at will. Can you imagine the positivity with which people will approach their daily lives if they could simply apply the glow?!

So firstly, I decided to analyse the feeling. For me, the feeling is freshness, warmth and sunshine… the way the sunlight plays on your skin highlighting the micro-fine beads of moisture followed by a gentle heat that warms you right through to your heart…lifting it. It is this feeling that makes you lift your face to the sun like a flower soaking up that feeling and puts a smile on your face.

So what essential oils could I possibly find that embodied this feeling?

You know,  this time it was actually very easy, it had to be citruses! All the citrus essential oils I could find where mixed and tested until I found the perfect three that I wanted Grapefruit, Orange, and Lime.

In addition to all of these essential oils literally calling up summer in the mind; they all work on the solar plexus and heart chakras opening and balancing them. This lifts up your heart allowing you to be more open to the possibilities around you.

So we have the essential oil blend, how do we deliver this to your skin in a medium that will not quickly compromise that feeling by being heavy or sticky? Well, we do have our incredible dispersible oil base. It is light, non sticky absorbs in quickly without leaving residue and leaves you feeling luxuriously moisturised…Result! And as a total bonus it can go into your bathwater and disperse completely releasing that stunning aroma into your bath water from which you emerge moisturised!

So I have the feeling, I have created two awesome methods for you to enjoy the feeling but I felt something was missing.

To truly be the glow I needed it to be GOLD…and there I hit the snag how do you do this without using titanium oxide or other allergents? It was at this point I discovered Mica!!! It is a completely inert silicate, so zero reactions and it came in glittering colours… I had my GOLD.

So ladies and gentlemen give you Aurum, the perfect sunshine moment in a bottle.

Psssst guess what?! this amazing feeling also now comes in soap form! of course all of our soaps are SLS-free, SLES-free, cruelty free and vegan friendly as normal

The Unfettered Woman

When creating our product range,  I chose to design with specific people or attributes in mind. I also decided to have definite outcomes for each product.

With Woman, I designed the product for an Unfettered Woman.  I brought to mind what an Unfettered Woman would be like, and how she would present herself to the world, and then designed a product to reflect that ambition.

The question in your mind now of course is, what or who is an Unfettered Woman ?

An Unfettered Woman is one that looks into the mirror and is totally at peace with the woman she sees. She is a woman that knows that she is a being of power, with the knowledge of how and when to wield that power. She is happy with her body, and all the pleasure that it is capable of affording her. She is grounded and very in touch with the core of her being. She knows what her core values are and will not accept any compromise on those values. She is an expression of love on earth; through her work, her life, her children and her relationships, and she resonates this love out into the wider world. She WILL NOT be defined by the perspectives and the prejudices of others. She aspires to always be the greatest expression of her being. If that wasn’t enough, she also has great skin, that is beautiful and unique to her and a reflection of the greatness within.

So how in the universe was I going to design a product that reflected the attributes of this Unfettered Woman. To make this feeling accessible to us mere mortals, while only using with three to four essential oils?!

I must admit it was not easy…. far from it in fact. I went through several combinations of essential oils until I hit on a blend of with the right composition of attributes and aroma that would deliver the results I wanted. As usual, I used the same lotion base, which is completely vegetable derived, to ensure zero to minimal reaction in our clients with sensitive skin or eczema, and also to deliver that amazing luxury feel that our lotions deliver so well. The essential oils used this time were clary sage, elemi, palmarosa, and patchouli.

Why these essential oils?

Clary sage helps with skin rejuvenation and skin cell renewal, delivering truly healthy glowing skin. More importantly, it helps to quiet an over-busy mind, allowing you to have better focus and flow of ideas. It helps to balance and open the root and sacral chakras, which are responsible for keeping you grounded in your power, and the material world, and also helps you with your sexual expression and the expression of your sacred feminine.

Elemi has long been associated with helping to reduce the lines and wrinkles associated with aging due its skin rejuvenating qualities. It helps to balance and align all your chakras, and opens the solar plexus chakra, which will greatly enhance your creativity. It also helps bring relief to those that are emotionally depleted.

Palmarosa helps to open the heart chakra and grounds you into Mother Earth’s energy, giving you a greater sense of security and and unconditional love, you are nourished from within.

Patchouli, made famous during the summer of love, is known to be very useful in helping dry chapped skin and helping to prevent wrinkles. It is a renowned aphrodisiac that allows you to bring out the sexy goddess within. Patchouli aligns the heart chakra with the root and sacral chakras, helping you release old fears, insecurities and jealousies, and therefore enabling you to live life to the full. It helps relax your mind and clarify your thoughts; grounding you in the now and allowing you to let go of situations that are beyond your control. It expands your heart and crown chakras, allowing you to work from a place of love and insight.

Together these amazing essential oils deliver the aims of this remarkable vegan face and body lotion, which is to deliver a skincare product that brings out the best you, both within and without.

Why these not those?

There are a gazillion essential oils out there with so many combinations available on the market. So how do we choose which combination to use in our products? How do we know, which will be the best for the results we want the product to deliver?

When I design products (and make no mistake this is a design process), I start at the end … meaning I start with you – the buyer. I ask myself what are the everyday skincare issues that plague men and women? How can I help with those? And lastly, how can I do it in the simplest way?

The way I see it, most women and men have the following basic everyday complaints about their skin. It is too dry, too oily, prone to spots and blackheads, prone to redness or all of these at once (or at least it feels that way). My aim is to help you deal with these complaints in the simplest way possible while being authentic to my goals of natural, simple, everyday and accessible.

So with my products I decided to keep it really simple, and made sure that all the products had a maximum of 4 essential oils. If I couldn’t do it with 4 or less then I had to go back to the beginning!

Our Girl lotion is a great example of this. I set out to create a product that dealt with the ever-changeable skin of the active young woman.

Most young women have what I like to call ‘non cooperative skin’… you know the type of skin that is absolutely perfect one day and the next feels like sand-paper or worse all the spots and black heads in the world decide to have a party on your face! There are of course lots of essential oils that have properties that can help with this but I wanted to create the BEST combination that was simple and accessible, and a mixture of chamomile, geranium and sweet orange creates a wonderful synergy that is simple, accessible and elegant.

  • Chamomile, has an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin reducing redness and irritation. It has known anti-bacterial qualities and is known to help with tissue regeneration. It has a soothing and calming effect helping to alleviate stress.
  • Orange helps reduce puffiness caused by water retention in the skin and helps with oily and dull complexions. It is also known to help cell regeneration and the aroma is refreshing and uplifting
  • Geranium essential oil is known to help balance sebum production in the skin so it is awesome for oily skin. It also helps with improving circulation in the skin and reducing water retention during PMS and helps tissue regeneration. It helps calm irritability and relaxes the mind.

With this combination, the Lotion Girl can help you get the ‘cooperative’ awesome skin you want… Oh and it smells amazing!

Take a look at these before and after shots! Our client used Girl and they are separated by about 10 minutes.

The Extraordinary …Every day

While I was at the Covent Garden Jubilee Market over the winter, a client, who bought a collection of my products, paid me a great compliment. He said my products were really very good and that all I needed to really take off as a business was the addition of something new and exotic that no one had thought of before and hey presto I would be huge! I, of course, smiled, thanked him for his compliment, and wished him a happy flight.

When he left, I began to think about what he said, and I asked myself: why does a skincare brand need some new and exotic product to make it seen? Why can’t we celebrate the amazing and wonderful ingredients that are quite literally on our doorstep?

When I started designing the products that would later become the Concept:Skin range,  I decided on a simple sustainable premise, KEEP IT SIMPLE!  If I couldn’t get  the results I wanted from my products with everyday, well known, garden variety essential oils ( and by that I mean essential oils of  flowers, fruit, herbs and plants that can be found in our gardens, fridges, kitchen cupboards, hedges and woods etc) then don’t bother.

Look at the recent buzz around Argan Oil. It is an awesome oil. It is rich in Linoleic acid and Omega-6, rich in essential fatty acids that help reduce inflammation, soften skin and help protect collagen. It is amazing for hair and skin… and it costs an absolute fortune!!!

Now let’s look at the Field of Oilseed Rapehumble ever irritating rapeseed. Yes, its pollen can lead to no end of suffering to those afflicted with hay-fever but the oil is a dream come true for skincare.

It has equivalent levels of Omega 3,6 &9 to olive oil , Vitamin E, Vitamin K and Plant sterols than any other vegetable oil, all of which promote healthy hair skin and nails. It has an  anti-inflammatory action, protects collagen, helps with skin rejuvenation, protects the skin from free radicals and is incredibly light – so it is easily absorbed by the skin.

And the best part… it doesn’t have to be sourced by chasing down a goat that ate a fruit at the top of a tree and make it poop out the seed… in Morocco… when the moon was full…

Simply look out of your window.

The Lotion Base – a comprehensive guide (in English)

These are the ingredients that are present in our lotion bases, in these notes we will explain where and what they are derived from and their function within the base and on your skin.

Aqua – Water. To make a stable emulsion you need water, oil and a product to keep them together (a surfactant). Our bases are water-in–oil emulsions, that is to say that the content of water in our emulsions are higher than that of oil to give it a non-greasy feel and help minimise the loss of water from the skin.

Cetearyl Alcohol – This stabilizes our lotions and is usually derived from coconut oil. Please ignore the term alcohol – you can’t drink it and it is different from the alcohol you get in wine.  It is used here simply as a chemical term .

Glycerine – is another form of alcohol sometimes known as Glycerol. It helps our lotions attract water to the skin’s surface and prevent excessive drying and evaporation. It is derived from plant sources.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride – This is a fatty acid that occurs naturally in coconuts and breast milk (we only use the product derived from coconuts I swear!!). It is used in our bases primarily as an emollient (a lotion that softens the skin) that doesn’t leave a greasy residue on skin.

Prunus Dulcis Oil (Sweet Almond Oil)– Sweet Almond oil is one of the most used carrier oils in cosmetic manufacture and this is understandable since it has a fine texture and helps to leave the skin soft and satiny smooth; yet it is non-greasy and easily absorbed. Rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E, it is an ideal basic carrier oil, nourishing and protecting to the skin. It helps to calm skin irritation and it has good keeping qualities the vitamin E helps to preserve the lotion.

Glyceryl Stearate – is a product made with glycerin and stearic acid. Stearic acid is a fatty acid derived from vegetable oils such as palm oil, soy oil or cocoa butter. In our lotions it acts as a lubricant on the skin’s surface, which gives the skin a soft and smooth appearance. It also slows the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin’s surface. This ingredient also helps to bind the lotion together.

Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa Butter) – Cocoa butter is of course derived from cold pressed cocoa pods. The butter is a mixture of mono-unsaturated fats like oleic acid and saturated fats, namely stearic acid and palmitic acid. It is known to temporarily protect injured or exposed skin from harmful or irritating stimuli and may provide relief to the skin. Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter also slows the loss of water from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin’s surface.

Cocos nucifera (Coconut Oil) – Coconut Oil, is obtained by cold pressing the oil from the dried inner flesh of the coconut. Coconut Oil is a source of lower chain length fatty acids (better for the skin), including lauric acid, capric acid, myristic acid and palmitic acid. In the lotion it is used as a skin conditioning agent. It is also used to help bind and maintain the lotion.

Cetearyl Glucoside – is a vegetable derivative made from coconut and glucose. It is used as an emulsifier (stabiliser) in our lotions.

Xanthan Gum – is a combination of sugar molecules produced by the bacterium Xanthamonas campetris. It is used in lotions to help stabilize the oil droplets, preventing them from getting bigger and breaking up the lotion.

Tocopherol Acetate – is a form of  Vitamin E, that is more stable and less acidic than pure vitamin E when added to emulsions. It is a fat-soluble vitamin that can be obtained from vegetable oils. It can penetrate through the skin to the living cells, where about 5% is converted to pure Vitamin E, which provides beneficial antioxidant effects.

Dehydroacetic acid – an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial compound. It acts as a preservative in the lotion by killing off and preventing the growth of micro-organisms that would contribute to the products decay.

Benzyl Alcohol – Benzyl Alcohol is a compound that is that is used as a preservative in very small concentrations to ensure the longevity of the lotion. It is also present in fruit plants and teas  such as apricots, cranberries, mushrooms and even in honey.

Sorbic acid – is a product used as a preservative in our lotion base. It prevents the growth of fungus and bacteria in the lotion. It occurs naturally in rowan berries.
